If you happen to be in the Mile End, let the aroma of freshly baked bread lead you straight to Hof Kelsten. It’s only been a couple of months since Hof Kelsten settled in on Saint-Laurent Blvd, but this establishment has been years in the making.

Owner and baker Jeffrey Finkelstein and his team are no rookies when it comes to bread making.  He’s been supplying bread to some of Montreal’s trendiest restaurants for quite some time, so it’s no surprise that the word on the street is that Hof Kelsten makes the best bread in town.

Whether you’ve heard of Jeffrey and Hof Kelsten or not, there’s a good chance you’ve already eaten his bread, as they  supply their baked delicacies to restaurants such as le Club Chasse et Pêche, Joe Beef, and La Buvette Chez Simone, just to name a few.

This bakery doesn’t have the appearance of your typical bakery, but instead looks something like an industrial cafeteria, complete with long counters and communal tables. The unfinished look is part of its charm, and the glass storefront makes it a great spot for people watching.

Hof Kelsten produces a variety of traditional bread including pumpernickel, sourdough, and challah, which is only available on Fridays.

They have a simple lunch menu, which consists of soups, latkes, sandwiches, and of course, coffee. The brisket sandwich is delicious, served on homemade rye bread, topped with apple slices, a coleslaw/beet concoction, and their own version of the thousand-island dressing: simple, yet packed with flavour.

For those who like to nibble on sweet snacks, try their strawberry & walnut rugelach, a Jewish pastry (similar to a strudel), which is cooked to perfection with a sweet sticky filling spilling out.

Fresh baked bread to go and delicious pastries make Hof Kelsten worth the visit.

Open: Wednesday to Sunday, from 8:00am to 7:00pm.
