Borrowing their name from the Atwater Market architect, Ludger, located on Notre-Dame West near Place St-Henri, is in the heart of an expanding Montreal area. This classic neighbourhood bistro-pub, ideal for a 5-à-7 after work, a supper, a drink later on, or even a weekend brunch, is very humble. What you see is what you get. Good ambiance, good drinks, good food. Period.

The winelist is affordable and is made up of a selection of artisan wine producers. Why not try a glass of cava? As for the cocktail list, it is short and sweet with drinks like the Dark and Stormy, a ginger based drink, or the Pimm’s, made with applesauce. They’re known for their cocktails, so take advantage while you’re there. They also have a great beer selection for the non-cocktail-inclined.

The menu, written on slate hung on the walls, isn’t set in stone (pun intended), which makes Ludger a great place to go to on days where the food at home isn’t inspiring; you won’t get bored with what they have to offer. The portions are smaller than a regular main dish and bigger than an entrée, ideal for sharing or for those who want multiple dishes to themselves. All of their dishes are prepared in an open kitchen by Chef Adam Aspelund (Barroco, XO, Chasse et Pêche). You can watch the chef prepare your meal all while sitting back in the laid-back and comfortable atmosphere.

For all you oyster lovers, Ludger hosts Happy Hour oysters, 6 for $9, served simply with lemon juice. Note that the weekend boozy brunches have their own menu that changes with the availability of fresh ingredients.
