Behold another year of traditions! Montreal has its own holiday tradition created by Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal. Les Grands Ballet hosts The Nutcracker’s World show at Place des Arts throughout the holiday season to the delight of children and adults alike.

What marks the beginning of the holiday season more than The Nutcracker? A story well known by everyone is being held this year at Place des Arts from December 11, 2014 to December 30, 2014, so be sure to get your tickets! When purchasing tickets, you have the option of two different show times. The first show, the matinée, is at 2:00pm, and the second show is at 7:30pm. Tickets vary between $62-$124 for adults and between $37-$72 for children under 12.

What to expect? The Nutcracker is a show created by Quebec dancer and choreographer Fernand Nault. The production takes you on Clara and her nutcracker’s journey the night of Christmas Eve. The evening begins when the children gather round to open their Christmas presents. Clara receives a wooden nutcracker from her godfather, but her brother Fritz breaks it because he is jealous. In the middle of the night, when absolutely anything can happen, Clara finds herself in the midst of a battle between mice, rats, and tin soldiers.  Her wonderful nutcracker, her toy that magically comes to life, finally comes to her rescue. He then takes her on a magical journey where she experiences his world filled with snow and sweets!

If that doesn’t sound exciting enough, one hour before each performance, actor Jacques Piperni invites children to listen to a reading of Hoffmann’s tale. He then randomly selects the Mouse of the Day. The lucky winner will then dress up as a mouse and take part in the show. It is every child’s dream to be part of the Nutcracker ballet (and if it’s not, it should be).

With a successful show every year, Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal have proven their worth time and time again. The company has also added to their repertoire of memorable events during the holiday season by hosting The Nutcracker Christmas Market, a fundraising shopping experience with proceeds going to the Nutcracker Fund for Children, started in 2010.
