Suoni Per Il Popolo, Montreal’s premiere avant-garde music festival, kicks off on June 4th until June 22nd, and if discovering new music at a low price tag is your thing, then you’re in for a treat. June 12th also marks the launch of the 26th annual Francofolies (check out our guide here) and we’ve got a few shows that are definitely worth checking out. It’s already time to start planning your next week out, so without further ado, here is your music fix from June 8th to 14th.

Sunday, June 8th, 2014

Another Sunday means another Piknic Électronik, and this week’s local line-up is worth the trek to Parc Jean-Drapeau. Montreal/Toronto crew Hushlamb, including Zeina and Ana + One, will be taking over the Smirnoff Ice stage for the day, with a surprise guest at 6:30pm. But you’re going to want to make it back downtown for 8:30pm to catch French rockers Phoenix playing their brand of new wave, synth-pop rock at the Metropolis.

American punk band Parquet Courts are ramping up the promo for the release of their upcoming LP Sunbathing Animal, and you’re not going to want to miss their set at Il Motore at 8:00pm joined by Tyvek, Protomartyr, and Heat. With such a stacked bill, and a $13 ticket price, you can’t afford to miss this Blue Skies Turn Black and Heavy Trip co-production, part of the Suoni Per Il Popolo festival.

Tuesday, June 10th, 2014

Our Suoni Per Il Popolo picks continue, with Die Like A Dog Trio playing at La Sala Rossa. Formerly a quartet, the trio, comprised of Peter Brötzmann, William Parker and Hamid Drake, is performing after 12 years of absence. All you free jazz heads are going to love this.

Wednesday, June 11th, 2014

German experimental electronic-rock band The Notwist is part of a triple-bill evening at the S.A.T. with Jel and local synth-pop purveyors How Sad, also part of the Suoni Per Il Popolo lineup.  Meanwhile, the P.E.I. pop-rock band Coyote will be playing Quai Des Brumes for an intimate show presented by Indie Montreal at 10:00pm.

Thursday, June 12th, 2014

It’s Francofolies kick-off time with Louis-Jean Cormier and Jimmy Hunt offering free shows at La Place des Spectacles starting at 6:00pm. Yet another festival is taking place throughout the city in the form of Fringe Fest, so catch one of their few musical offerings Buddy McNeil & The Magic Mirrors at Divan Orange, presented in collaboration with Indie Montréal and Sors-Tu. Why not hit up the free MURAL & MEG bloc party from 5:00 – 10:00pm on the corner of Saint-Laurent and Prince-Arthur for some electronic and hip-hop beats.

Friday, June 13th, 2014

We’ve got an embarrassment of riches on Friday and we’re sorry for making your choice difficult, but this is what Montreal’s all about. MURAL presents another bloc party, this time in association with Saintwoods, and considering this is a free event at 1:00pm, this should be a no-brainer. Quebec hip-hop artist Koriass is playing at Club Soda as part of the Francofolies at 7:00pm, and then at 8:00pm Xavier Cafeïne is offering a free show at L’Esplanade de la Place des Arts, followed by hip-hop jokesters Radio Radio at the Montreal Metropolis at 9:00pm. But if all you want is to throw some shapes on a Friday night, Le Belmont has got you covered with the “Flirt d’été et pleine leune” edition of the infamous Frenche ou Meurs parties.

Saturday, June 14th, 2014

Red Bull is launching their Hometown Tour, hitting various cities across Canada with a series of free live shows. They stop by Montreal at the Quai Jacques-Cartier with a double bill of Young Galaxy and Plants & Animals starting at 3:00pm. You must RSVP for your tickets here.
