For a long time, Montreal lacked in great Mexican food. We had the occasional Three Amigos, but let’s be honest, Montrealers have greater needs. Recently and thankfully, we’ve experience a big boom in new Mexican restaurants. One of these, located on St-Laurent Boul. right off St-Viateur in the heart of the Mile-End, is called MAÏS and is only a couple of months old.

Fairly new in town, MAÏS is already making an impact on Montrealers’ love for tacos. MAÏS is a sit-down restaurant with a very relaxed and laid-back atmosphere. The décor has an old-school feel to it, with wooden furniture, interesting ornaments on the walls, and mellow lighting for an all-around calm and enjoyable environment. Seating arrangements are intimate and placed in a manner that encourages interaction. Take for example one of their tables, a long bar-like wooden structure that can accommodate several groups; bringing the bar concept into the kitchen.

The menu is meant to be shared, and is more than affordable (give or take 5$ per taco), allowing you to try it all. But don’t stop at food, their cocktails are also quite good. Try the Michelada; it’s a no-brainer. MAÏS do not take reservations; however, instead of waiting in line you can give your cell phone number and make a nice round in the neighbouring bars, such as Waverly or Sparrow. As soon as your table is ready, you will receive a prompt call. Keep some place in your tummy for that Michelada! One thing we need to warn you about is their cash only policy. An ATM is however at your disposal if you happen to be stuck. If you want to eat authentic Mexican food, enjoy a comforting atmosphere, and still be able to afford the rest of your night, MAÏS should be a destination for you to keep in mind.
