Festival season is winding down but not doing so quietly, with Heavy MTL closing off on Sunday to make way for newly minted EDM and hip hop festival Île Soniq at Parc Jean-Drapeau on Friday and Saturday. Don’t miss out on some primo indie bands playing throughout the week. Time to get Your Music Fix for the week of August 10th to 16th:

Sunday, August 10th, 2014

For Montreal rock and metal fans, the 2nd weekend of August is like the Holy Mecca of weekends, with Heavy MTL taking over the Parc Jean-Drapeau for 2 days. Sunday’s lineup includes California thrash metal band Slayer, Toronto punk darlings Fucked Up, punk legends Bad Religion, and groove metal band and Heavy MTL favourites, Lamb of God.

Monday, August 11th, 2014

Suoni Per Il Popolo and CKUT present experimental rock/electronic band Shalabi Effect at the Casa Del Popolo for a packed showcase. Joining them for the night will be Michael Foster, David Grollman, and the Ben Bennett Trio.

Tuesday, August 12th, 2014

It’s a trio of local acts who’ll be performing at La Vitrola on Tuesday, with art-rockers The Annoying being joined by Montreal folk-artist Emma June and funk/disco/électro collective BEAT SEXÜ.

Wednesday, August 13th, 2014

Known for his crazy stage antics and high energy shows, Bog Log III should be an interesting night at Il Motore. Presented by Blue Skies Turn Black in collaboration with the One Man Band Fest, see the man who calls his project a “one man band, guitar, dance, mess.” His costume alone is worth the price of admission.

Thursday, August 14th, 2014

While the band Passenger may have dissolved in 2009, lead signer Michael David Rosenberg continues to perform solo under the same moniker. The British folk rock singer comes to Montreal to promote his recently released fifth studio album Whispers.

Friday, August 15th, 2014

The inaugural edition of new EDM/hip hop festival Île Soniq kicks off on Friday for 2 days with a pretty stacked lineup. Dutch DJ Tiësto headlines the event, along with viral-hit #Selfie producers The Chainsmokers, Australian MC Iggy Azalea, moombahton pioneer Dillon Francis, and local favourites Adventure Club.

Saturday, August 16th, 2014

Saturday’s edition of Île Soniq does not let up, with the likes of Filipino-Dutch DJ Laidback Luke, American record producer AraabMuzik, Israeli psytrance legends Infected Mushroom, Toronto duo Zeds Dead, prolific remixer Tommie Sunshine, and British dubstep producer Caspa all playing. However, our top non-festival pick goes to Toronto indie-pop band Alvvays, who’ve just released their incredible self-titled debut album; they’ll be playing at La Vitrola accompanied by Chicago alt-pop singer-songwriter J Fernandez.
