The Francofolies might be over, but this week marks the start of this year’s edition of the Montreal International Jazz Fest (peep our guide here). We’ve also got a number of free shows for you to discover, including a duo of St-Jean Baptiste picks, not to mention Ms. Lauryn Hill’s return to Montreal. Time to get your music fix for the week of June 22nd to 28th.

Sunday, June 22nd, 2014

Fringe Pop is back for a second day at the Parc des Amériques for a full roster of free shows, although donations are welcomed and encouraged. Day 2 includes sets by Naminal and Le Trouble. Meanwhile, Craft Spells, Justin Paul Vallesteros’ “bedroom rock” project, stops by Il Motore to promote his new album Nausea.

Monday, June 23rd, 2014

Lauryn Hill heads back on tour after her stint in jail back in late 2013, and stops by L’Olympia de Montréal for a much-anticipated solo show. L’Autre Saint-Jean continue their yearly tradition of holding a great outdoor free show on the eve of Saint-Jean Baptiste day at the Parc du Pélican, with Alex Nevsky, Random Recipe, and Lisa Leblanc all performing.

You’ll have no trouble finding a plethora of events across the city to celebrate Saint-Jean Baptiste day, but if you’re looking for some good beats, some dancing, and a great setting, head over to Terrasse St-Ambroise for another edition of their Sud-West evenings featuring DJ Poirier. The event is free and the beer is cheap; what are you waiting for?

Wednesday, June 25th, 2014

What to do on a Wednesday night? We think you deserve a little surf pop in the form of Icelandic/British group Dream Wife, who is playing at La Vitrola at 8:00pm. Or go support local indie-rock band Reliefs as they release their debut EP at Divan Orange.

Thursday, June 26th, 2014

The Montreal International Jazz Fest kicks off in grand fashion with the return of Yoann Lemoine, better known as Woodkid, who has the honour of performing the opening free outdoor show. With a background as a visual artist and music video director (think Lana Del Rey, Moby, and Drake), you can expect a highly immersive set at Place-Des-Arts. Afterwards, head over to the PHI Centre for their DJ Thursdays with Sinjin Hawke, where you can shop and dance until 2:00am.

Friday, June 27th, 2014

Vancouver-based punk rock band White Lung are performing at Divan Orange for what is expected to be a packed show. Or hit up Le Belmont for Rewind, their new wave dance party featuring Plastik Patrick, J Deeh, and Davidé.

Saturday, June 28th, 2014

Frip’show are holding their annual “urban bazaar” at the St-Michel Church with musical performances by New Apple Taste, Cherry Chérie, and more. Passovah, Blue Skies Turn Black, and Pop Montréal are presenting CTZNSHP, alongside Holy Data and Kurvi Tasch, at La Vitrola for a night of good old-fashioned rock & roll.
