Montreal is filled with different cultures, and just like the people living here, our city’s events are just as diverse. We’ve had the pleasure of showcasing that diversity when we hosted the Shen Yun show on January 6 through January 9, held at Downtown Montreal’s Place Des Arts Theater. Shen Yun was a representation of Chinese culture through the performing arts. Dance, music, and performance all took place on the elaborate stage, each representing the history and traditions of China in their own form, and with a twist of course. Through the use of elaborate hand-made costumes, colorful and grand backdrops, and talented artists, the performances transported the audience to a world of the divine and left most in awe, standing up for more at the end of the show.
The Shen Yun Performing Arts company is based in New York and since conception has rapidly taken the globe by storm, being showcased in over 130 cities around the world. As a non-profit, those involved in the creation of the show have but one purpose: for the audience to experience the beauty of China’s cultural heritage, including it’s history, traditions, mythology, and legends. The performances tell stories of flying pigs and thieves bringing to life 5000 years of Chinese tradition into a 3-hour show. The dancing showcased classical Chinese dance, which tends to mimic martial arts expressions. It is also known to be one of the most difficult types of dance, but the dancers demonstrated immense depth of movement, making each movement seem effortless yet unnatural. The musical layer in Shen Yun uses ancient Chinese instruments such as strings, percussions, woodwings, and brass all of which was executed by a full orchestra accompanied by strong vocal soloists.
Shen Yun mixes both something from the past and the present, transporting the audience through different times thanks to sound and strong visuals. For those who missed out, not to worry, Shen Yun is expected to return to Montreal next year. You can expect breathtaking performances that will have you laughing, crying and on your feet by the end of it. Shen Yun is definitely a must-see and it will be worth your while…and money.
